From the show floor at Podcast Movement 2019, Todd and Mike go over some of the news and happenings at this years show in Orlando Florida.
This episode does not follow our normal format. Next week, we will go over more of the news from the show and how this will matter to you and your show.
Mike interviewed PJ Ewing from the Bee’s Knees Podcast and X10 Therapy about how they are using podcasting to build business and how PJ has fallen in love with podcasting.
With only a few days left until Podcast Movement we’re getting antsy to head to Orlando. Before that, we’ve got lots to talk about in podcasting. The Podcast Awards, hosted by Todd, is announcing the nominees this weekend, iHeart is translating shows and Entercom bought up two podcast companies. We also discuss files names, specifically best practices and how to not cause an issue for yourself and your podcast. Lastly, we ask that you please be kind and patient to tech support. Again, we’ll be at Podcast Movement next week and we want to see you so, stop by booth #114 to record a promo — maybe you’ll win a RODEcaster Pro — and ask your podcasting questions at our help desk.
Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider.

Security Plugins or add-ons for WordPress: Some of them can block things like APPLE. If your feed checks out in CastFeedValidator.com but Apple says they can’t read your feed, then likely you have a firewall or security plugin that is blocking Apple. The user agent for Apple starts with CFNetworks and their IP addresses all start with 17.xxx.xxx.xxx. So, if you are having that issue, check with your web host that you are not blocking those things. Another possible work-around for that would be to use PodcastMirror.com (a free service by Blubrry).
Be nice to tech support 😃 (or any customer service person you use) They ARE there to help. Lately, we have had a rash of people just start out mean. Our Tech Support guys are very good at not acting in kind, but it’s so much nicer to start out with the facts of the issue, answer a few questions and we can solve the issue or tell you how to solve it. We are not here as a punching bag for your frustrations. We do understand that it can be frustrating, believe me! But, we are humans as well. It’s a lot nicer when you don’t feel like screaming 🙂

Our guest Lee Rammy has a podcast on the happenings where he lives, Ramsbottom. Todd discusses his show and then catches up on podcasting news and best practices with Mike. We’ve got quite a bit updating with Blubrry at the moment, including a second recent release of PowerPress and our dynamic advertising insertion system is available for podcasters.
We’re coming to close to Podcast Movement and tell you just what we have planned this time around, our 6th time attending. Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider.
Podcasting Help Desk and Recording Promo Content: Don’t miss the opportunity to record a promo for your show and win a RODEcaster. And of course ask Mike all your podcasting questions.
PowerPress Update: Yep, we put out a new version after our main release. Minor change, but go ahead and update please!
Spotify Stats and Pass Through: In the near future Spotify stats will be counted exactly like all other podcast apps in stats.

Blubrry Directory URLs: We can’t change them. They’re irrevocably tied to your stats and hosting folder. The only way to change it is to start over. We’ll help in every way possible, but we will try to talk you out of it first 🙂
Blubrry Publisher to WordPress and PowerPress: Upgrading is easy; we can move you over without any feed issues.
Coming at you from the Convo By Design podcast studio at Blubrry’s Columbus, Ohio office.

Significant changes coming from Apple this time around. Categories are changing and that includes throwing some out, adding new ones and a bit of consolidating. Podcasters don’t need to worry, Blubrry has it all taken care of on their end. But stick around for suggestions on what to do if a new category would be in your best interest.
More than that, PowerPress was updated again for this category change and some other cool features. They chat about other podcasting news, and have an extraordinary interview with Kami Guildner you don’t want to miss. Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider.
Choices – We give you choices! Your own WordPress? (A free WordPress or Deluxe WordPress that we host) Or no WordPress. We can help you know the difference.
PowerPress Podcast and Your Podcast by Blubrry are now combined into Podcast Insider. (found at PodcastInsider.com).
If you were subscribed to one or the other, you do not need to do anything continue to get the new show. If you were subscribed to BOTH shows, you can remove one of them as they are both the same feed now.
You may notice some episdoes you have never seen or heard before. That is because of the combining of the 2 feeds. Feel free to listen to them or ignore them as you see fit 🙂
We will have the first official episode of Podcast Insider on Friday!
Music in podcasting; there are many questions out there regarding the legality and capabilities, we’re here to clear that up. A knowledgable and experienced podcaster looked into who is the fastest media host in podcast and shared their findings. PowerPress 7.5 is coming soon and the original Podcast Awards are coming soon. Guest host, Barry Kantz, CFO and General Counsel for RawVoice / Blubrry.
News:
Daniel J. Lewis, from the Audacity to Podcast, has done a very technical review, article and research about who is the fastest podcast media host. (Spoiler, Blubrry tied for 1st place!). Also, some very interesting facts about stats for some hosts.
PowerPress 7.5 (coming soon) will support WebSub, which does instant updating of Google Podcasts and others, and Multi Blubrry hosting accounts. This is good for people that want more than one podcast feed coming from their site.
Do you want to use music in your podcasts? Barry, the Master of Fine Print, received a call from a Blubrry customer asking about the legalities of starting a music podcast. This question comes up from time-to-time so Barry explains the ins-and-outs of using music in your show.
Support:
If you do not see your latest episode in apps or directories, make sure its in your RSS feed first.
Clear the cache on your website (how to do that or if you need to do that varies with where you are hosting your site and what caching plugin you may or may not have)
Check feed on CastFeedValidator.com to make sure nothing went wrong and to make sure the episode made the RSS feed.
Check your favorite podcast app to see that you got the new episode. (YES, subscribe to your own show!)
Relax 😀 If all the above is good, it WILL get to the directories and apps when they PULL it next. Nothing is wrong!
Email addresses when contacting tech support: if you need to contact support at Blubrry, please either use the email address on your account or TELL us what it is in the first email so we don’t have to ask. To find your account we need the email address you use to login to blubrry.com. Also, the name of the show you are asking about is helpful. It will speed up your response time.
iTunes new feed URL box in the Apple tab of PowerPress. DO NOT USE THIS unless you know what it’s for. It is NOT where your Apple Podcasts subscription link goes. That goes in the destinations tab in PowerPress where it says Apple Listing URL.
Changes coming soon to this podcast. Todd and Mike talk about the changes coming for Your Podcast and PowerPress Podcast (but not telling you the new name yet!). Also, Triton Digital buys Omny Studio and Castbox plays within Waze app.
Ads between podcasts in an app. What do you think about this? (Spotify and others)
Spotify player caution: plays in the Spotify player might not count in your Blubrry stats due to a caching issues (in most cases).
Ad Injection coming: July 8th beta testers needed. Contact support@blubrry.com if you are interested.
PowerPress update has important updates. If you use PowerPress, UPDATE!
Support:
Upload limits for Blubrry hosting.
mp3 Encoding. File size is related to bitrate; 128kbps is 1mb per minute, 64kbps is 1/2mb per minute. More than 128 is likely wasting space and bandwidth for you and your listeners.
Subscribe links in PowerPress. Why doesn’t my “Apple Podcasts” link show up right away? (hint: you have to put your Apple Listing link in the destinations tab of PowerPress Settings)
Keeping it simple. Giving all the apps only one choice in your tags ensures your notes looks the same (as much as it can be) on all apps. Trying to do different things for different platforms is going to drive you nuts. RSS is a standard and different tags for the same thing gives Apps and directories a choice. Some will take one and some will take the other.

Did you know that in 2018 podcasting was responsible for $479 million in revenue? The podcasting industry is predicted to break the billion mark in 2021, and in this episode MacKenzie discusses podcasting future valuations overall. The episode starts with a quick recap on Apple changes; nothing to worry about, this is an Apple years in the making. MacKenzie discusses advertising and how the entire industry needs to try something a bit more creative to continue growth if they’ll make it to the billion dollar valuation. Lastly, if you don’t have a trailer for your podcast, you might be missing out on potential new listeners. Stick around to the end to catch the latest podcast MacKenzie was a guest on.
Thanks for listening and please subscribe via your favorite podcast app. If you’d like to be a guest on the show reach out to MacKenzie. She’s always looking for fun, new podcasters that use Blubrry services, specifically PowerPress.
iTunes may be dead, but Apple Podcasts is doing just fine. Changes are afoot at Apple, announced at WWDC last week and we’ve got all the information you need. Stick around to hear why you want to use WordPress and PowerPress to power your podcast. Mike and Todd were even both in the same time zone this time around to record. Don’t miss them reviewing push vs. pull technology too!
We love our PowerPress users, please leave us a review

Advantages of Being on WordPress and PowerPress with Blubrry Hosting.
( PowerPress *can* be used without Blubrry hosting if you HAVE to)
Own your RSS feed by using PowerPress on YOUR domain.
Stable platform that is updated regularly for new things in podcasting (like Apple Categories and tags).
Not going out of business next week (or without notice).
IAB v2.0 Certified Compliant stats.
All kinds of support; we offer screen sharing to troubleshoot your issue.
Ease of use: Post – Upload – Publish.
Using your own domain means you cannot be “deplatformed” easily.
Disadvantages of going with a less established platform.
Support may be hard to get or nonexistent.
You don’t own your RSS feed address.
Company stability; no worries on if they’re going out of business in the future.
They may submit your feed to the directories (easy) but you don’t own those listings (bad).
May not keep up with the changes at Apple or other directories (cough Soundcloud cough) Beware of shiny object syndrome. Things may appear better than they actually are.
Support:
Directory issues: If an episode isn’t available in only one specific directory, AND you’ve given that directory ample time to update, it is most likely a problem with that app or directory. Please contact that team first.
Spotify listings: Lately they’ve been slow updating shows with new episodes. Relax, nothing is wrong, as long as your episode is in your feed and is available in all the other directories. Spotify is just lagging at the time of this recording. By the time you hear this it’s possible the problem has been fixed.
All podcast directories and apps utilize your RSS feed. When you update your RSS feed with a new episode, directories, apps and subscriber software, all check YOUR RSS feed to see if something is new. It’s not an instant technology like we’re used to with Twitter, Instagram, posting blog posts. etc.
It’s common for people to have the wrong impression of how RSS feeds work, thinking they PUSHES out to everyone. It does not. ALL these places and your subscribers PULL your feed. It asks for your feed when it gets around to it and PULLS your feed to update your listing. Your subscribers are subscribed to your feed and after that never really touch Apple Podcasts or the other services again – they use it simply for the listening capability. They are just subscribed to your feed directly in their app of choice. Subscribe to your own show and take care to notice if you receive your new episodes right away. If so, everything is working correctly. It works the same as every other directory or app. There is nothing we or you can do to make that faster. It takes whatever time it takes.
To check your RSS feed to make sure it’s working and which episodes are in it, go to CastFeedValidator.com and put your RSS feed address in the box and validate. This will display the contents of the feed and what is in directories and apps at the time.
